Of course, this engagement ring isn't quite as exciting as most. Jill and I both agree that, in her words, "We're not diamond people." She had casually mentioned some time ago that while she wouldn't want a real diamond engagement ring, it would sort of be fun to have something big, sparkly, and obnoxious to wear on her finger between the engagement and the wedding, so that she would have plenty of opportunities to inform curious acquaintances that she was, in fact, scheduled to enter into a legally binding lifelong commitment of love and devotion with a very special man. "So, you know, something like a gumball-machine ring," she said.

What guy would argue with that?

Well, it's not a gumball-machine ring, as I'm far too much of a show-off for that. Being a crafty sort of person, I made her a ring, from "gold" wire and glass crystal beads, all purchased for about $10 at a craft store.

At Jill's behest and Shannon's relentless urging, I have put this little gallery together to show the thing off. Click on the little images below to experience the full splendor of the $10 Craft Store Faux-Everything Engagement Ring.
